Lots of people enjoy cycling and we see many bikes on our roads throughout the year whether they are being used for commuting, leisure or professional training by people of all ages.

Cyclists are very vulnerable, and we are passionate about encouraging the use of cycle helmets, lights and hi-visibility clothing.

The new Highway Code no longer advises for cyclists to stay on the left-hand side of the road and do not have to use any cycle lanes provided. Cyclists are told to ride “No less than half a metre” from the kerb or verge, placing greater responsibility on the motorist to overtake safely, leaving a minimum gap of 1.5 metres at speeds of up to 30mph and giving them more space when overtaking at higher speeds.

Cyclists are required to give way to pedestrians, as instructed by Section 36 of the Road Traffic Act 1988 and must obey all traffic signs and traffic light signals.

Cycle training

North Yorkshire Council and City of York Council offer level 1 & 2 Bikeability courses to all year 5 and 6 pupils via primary schools. Level 3 is also available for older children and adults.
